D&AD Annual 2010

Here are the best magazines and newspapers as selected for this year’s D&AD Awards earlier this year. First, though, a few thoughts about the Annual they appear in.

This years D&AD Annual has just been published to members, with a public edition to follow. The book itself is the best one for ages (and not just because magCulture designed the page templates ;). After several rather self-consciously over-designed books this one has been conceived by artist Bob and Rita Smith. He (he’s one person) works with hand-painted text and has subtitled the book ‘Every Thing Is Made’. His beautiful, playful type appears on the cover and on the poster that wraps it (there are four different versions). It’s bright, colourful and funny. Perfect for these times.

Inside, Smith (the Smiths?) marks each section opener with an anagram of the category it marks. Hence ‘Disappearing newsmen gaze den’, above, for the Magazine and Newspaper Design section. The dividers do their job well, and apart from the poster and the yellow bookmark, the only extragavence is a birthday card style chip and speaker that carries Smith’s voice welcoming you to the book.

Here are the magazines and newspapers featured, page by page. As ever there are maagzines missing because they didn’t enter, and the rigourous judging process filtered some personal favourittes out. Overall a good selection, though. Good to see big wins for two extremes – the independent Apartamento and the more commericalElle. And three lear winners in terms of quantity: New York, Die Zeit and the New Yorker.
