New Assignment - Templates and NY Times Mark-up

Your assignments for next week are:
1) Design department and feature templates.
2) Mark-up New York Times.

About designing templates:
In real life, every section of a magazine has a template and the designer would pull that particular section's template and fill it with new content. They don't do everything over and over each time. This saves them time and designing templates for your magazine will save you time, too. You will be determining the structure and what your type combinations are ultimately
going to be.

Templates:
  • Design your templates in single sheets.
  • Do not use photography or illustration.
  • Decide; how many columns you will use, the baseline grid, margins, gutter, column width and where your hangline should be.
  • Feature templates contain; a headline, a subhead, a byline, body copy(text type), folio line, captions and credit line.
  • Department templates contain; a headline, a subhead, a byline, body copy, rubric, folio line, captions and credit line.
  • Choose typefaces and create a hierarchy with your typography.
  • Include all details like drop caps, lead ins, captions, pull quotes, photo credits, etc. The more you figure now, the less you have to do later.
  • And, print the grid so we can see.
  • Text type is the same throughout the magazine to hold everything together.
  • Make variations so that you'd have alternatives to choose from.

New York Times Mark-up:
Buy a NY Times, and mark -up the elements on an art directed section and the jump. Identify such elements as sidebars, captions, drop caps, pull quotes, text justified or ragged, headline, subhead, byline etc. You can scan it or bring to class.

Work hard,
Ayca.
