this week's assignment from gen for edit design:
leave the tediousness of the templates and nytimes markups for a week.
design your first feature spread.
go wild within the context of your mag.
make your spread poster like.
you need a headline, a subhed, credits and strong magery.
subheds sometimes jump to the followup layout, so fine if you leave it out
need a byline and illustration or photography credit.
(don't forget or these folks will never work for you again.)
have fun.
remember to kern your display type.
i'm looking for art direction skills and a strong design sensibility.
this layout should help set the tone for your mag.
look forward to the results.
btw. no lorem ipsum, no fake stories, no stock imagery, no well known photography.
below are some professional samples, now several years old.
look at society of publication designers annuals, spd.org, for more current examples.
