ASSIGNMENT
- Fix and finish up what you've already done. That includes all 3 features, openers and jump spreads, and all 3 department spreads.
- In addition to these, design a contents spread and an end page spread.
- Bring all your up-to-date work to class.
GUIDELINES
- FEATURES
Feature opener has to grab the reader's attention into the story, so take your time and try to make them as strong and interesting as possible.
Pull Quotes are literally pieces of text pulled from the story. They break up large chunks of text and create visual interest on the spread - think of them as art pieces and try to make them look interesting. - DEPARTMENTS
Unlike features, all departments should follow the same formula, i.e., they should all be consistent throughout. Please keep in mind that this is the structure which holds your magazine. - CONTENTS AND END PAGES
Contents and End Pages are also departments. Therefore, they follow the same formula as the other departments do. - CONTENTS
However in the contents spread, your rubric could read "contents" or you can use the name of your magazine or take them both out. This is your stylistic choise. The table of contents should be tackled last, once all of your stories are in place and in order. - END SPREAD
Usually in a magazine the very end page is an ad. But since you will be designing it as a spread it could be anyting you wish. This is again your stylistic choise. Some magazines use generic subjects such as a horoscope, cartoon or crossword puzzle. Try to come up with a clever and fun subject for your end spreads.
Few end page examples of recent publications are: New York Times Magazine - Lives, New York - Artifacts, GQ - Open Letter, Vogue - Last Look, W - Last Laugh...
I will be posting some examples on the blog. In the meantime if you have any questions please send me an e-mail...
Work hard and have fun...A.
