Departments should have a consistent structure. First get your templates right.
Get your headline, subhead, pull quote, rubric, caption working together before you incorporate the images in your layouts. Figure out the hang line and keep the body copy underneath that line.

I think you mean "maquette"? Machete is a large cleaver-like cutting tool, used to cut through thick brush and jungle. Think Rambo.
